Health Hazards of Chemicals
HAZARDOUS AREA CLASSIFICATION PART 4
FREE - Training Module on PERMIT TO WORK
Exposure to Eye
Chemical
exposure to eyes is one of the serious concern in chemical health hazard. If a
chemical comes in contact with the eyes, avoid rubbing but immediately and
thoroughly wash the eyes with flowing water in the nearest eye wash fountain –
SPEED IS ESSENTIAL. Ensure the water coming out of the eye wash is clear and in
normal temperature. Have someone dial and summon emergency help. Continue
washing for 15 minutes or until the ambulance arrives. It is not good practice
to wear contact lenses in the laboratory. Always ensure the eye protection
while handling or working with any chemicals.
Exposure to
Skin
A judicious
laboratory practice is to avoid ALL skin contact with any chemicals. If skin
exposure occurs, wash the entire exposed skin area thoroughly with water –
SPEED IS ESSENTIAL. Ensure the water coming out of the eye wash is clear and in
normal temperature. For some small area exposures, a sink outlet may be the
closest water source and completely suitable to wash the area, however, do not
hesitate to use the nearest safety shower(ensure water in normal temperature)
if the exposure area cannot be completely covered by water from a sink outlet.
Always ensure the required personal protective equipment’s while handling or
working with any chemicals.
Inhalation Exposure
Be fully
aware of the chemical properties, read the safety data sheets before
handling/working with the chemicals. Work in a chemical fume hood to lessen
inhalation of potential vapors and dust. If illness from inhalation of a
chemical occurs remove the person at once to fresh air, keep quiet and warm.
Dial the emergency contact number to call an ambulance. If breathing has
stopped, begin artificial respiration at once. Since most chemical fume hoods
vent above the roof, be aware of and inform the Safety Coordinator or
Administrator if toxic or noxious chemicals may be released. Do not endanger
people working outside the building or on the roof by hood activities.
Exposure by
Ingestion
Always
ensure the required personal protective equipment’s while handling or working
with any chemicals. Thoroughly Wash hands before eating. Do not use laboratory
glassware & devices for eating or drinking. These precautions are
especially important for anyone working with highly toxic chemicals,
microorganisms, parasites or radioactive materials.
